Tristan is an apprentice electrician from Greensborough Secondary College. He joined the Banyule TAC L2P Program after hearing about it from his brother, who had also completed the program.
For Tristan, getting his licence wasn’t just a milestone – it was necessary to keep moving in his apprenticeship.
While he had already gained many driving hours with his employer (travelling to and from work), he needed additional support to reach the requirements to pass the test.
Tristan was matched with L2P mentor, Peter.
Peter brings a diverse work background spanning across banking, process engineering, furniture assembly, superannuation security, and retail.
For Tristan, the L2P program meant “getting the opportunity to learn from a more skilled driver.” He appreciated the “flexible and person-centred” approach of the L2P program: “it felt welcoming and I got good vibes when I met my mentor.” He also welcomed Peter’s support in the lead up to his driving test.
“Peter was really helpful in preparing me with specific examples and follow up lessons.”
For Peter, being an L2P mentor is highly rewarding. He enjoys “meeting really nice young people and having the opportunity to help them out.”
“I feel really thankful for what I do,” he said.
For Tristan, getting his license did more than help him continue his apprenticeship; it gave him a sense of autonomy and liberation.
“I can go camping, go around Australia – freedom to pursue what I’d like out of life.”
